Set amongst the heritage of the oldest continuously operating railway workshops in the country, the Workshops Rail Museum offers an award-winning inspirational cultural experience like no other.

The very first train to run in Queensland steamed from here to Bigges Camp, now Grandchester, over 140 years ago, and with the rebirth of this site as an interactive rail museum, coupled with the oldest continually operating railway workshops in Australia, it is once again an icon for the region.

Explore over 15 larger-than-life exhibits to discover the enormous impact rail has had on our lives, beautifully restored carriages, the largest model railway of Queensland, the future of rail and treasured icons including the Vice-Regal carriage.

Plan your visit during one of the many popular events that include Day out with Thomas, Circus Train, Toyland Express and Queensland Model Railway Show.

Enjoy hands-on exhibits, multi-media encounters, colourful stories, huge steam locomotives, massive industrial machinery and over 140 years of history.

Getting there:

North Street, North Ipswich. Ipswich is located 40km west of Brisbane and easily accessed by road or rail.

By train:

Many years ago my father came to stay from Bendigo and we visited the Railway musuem. He spent many hours talking to his grandchildren about trains. He worked for the railways for over 50years and this gave them something in common.

My girls (5, 3, 1 yrs) loved the Thomas the Tank Engine exhibit so much that we have been back twice, and plan to see the next exhibit. Great day out - very exciting for little & big train buffs.

Great day out for young and old train enthusiasts. Children will enjoy seeing Thomas the Tank Engine and meeting the Fat Controller then listening to his stories.

I took my son over the christmas holidays. He loved it. When we are in the Brisbane area again(we live over 400km away), I'm sure we will be back there again.

The "Day out with Thomas" is a must see if you have a child even remotely interested in Thomas the Tank Engine. I have recommended it to numerous friends and my son still takes about it weeks after we took him out as a "special surprise". The playroom is awesome. Thank you so much for such a great family day out.
