Take a trip to Fraser Island

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Wind down your window and throw away your normal city roads and suburban worries. Fraser Island will teach you all about wide open pristine spaces, unspoilt beauty, lush rainforests, stunning freshwater lakes and the exhilaration of driving on sand, not monotonous bitumen.

The world’s largest sand island is a haven for adventure. Explore in your own 4WD or take a tour bus or even a H3 Hummer. Tackle the inland bumps and humps through towering satinay trees, abundant forest and picturesque sand dunes. Enjoy an invigorating swim in the emerald waters of Lake Wabby where Hammerstone Sandblow forms a wall of sand at its base. Lake Mackenzie shines sapphire blue, blessed with shores of snow-white sand.

On the quiet side of the island, blend seamlessly with nature at the award winning eco resort, Kingfisher Bay Resort and village. They offer a range of accommodation, restaurants, tours and activities. On the eastern side of the island, 4WD enthusiasts, fishermen and families enjoy campsites with rolling surf views and endless kilometres of sand highway.

Shipwrecks and sheltered bays flash by your window but be sure to stop and enjoy the view. Climb Indian Head and gaze down upon schools of fish, sharks, dolphins, rays and turtles, enjoying their own sea safari. They are probably having just as much fun as you.

Truely a great adventure as it is such a diverse place.First the barge ride over calm and relaxing, talking to people who mostly are excited about there comming adventure. The drive across to the ocean side is awsome also demanding as driving must be in 4x4 as often road conditions are not the best and the scenery is at times out of a movie. Than the ocean which really is picturest with the contrasting sections of the island of many sand colours and also in the evening the hole island again changes colour and mood. Most of all the fishing is really great. What an experience.I live in Hervey Bay and dream of going back every chance I get. I am in love with the place.

I spent a week on Fraser Island last year, four-wheel driving everywhere was amazing, the tracks were challenging, and the views were always breathtaking. Even driving through the heart of the island there was something to see, the size of the trees was remarkable, and quite humbling. The lakes were pristine and beautiful; especially Lake Mackenzie. We spent a whole day there just floating around in the clear water. I have never seen water like that at Lake Mackenzie! We camped on the beach side and experienced the thrill of night time visits from dingoes and during the day we saw lizards, and gorgeous birds. It was the best experience and I still treasure that trip. No other trip has come close to topping that of Fraser Island!

We kept hearing about this amazing sand island off the Queensland coast. And now we know why! Not only is the island truly beautiful with the coloured sands, fresh water pools, and fabulous accommodation, but when we took a flip over the ocean we were treated to the most amazing sight of whales displaying their size and agility. This place is a must!
