Sail the 74 Islands of the Whitsundays

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Fancy yourself as a sailor, slicing through some of the world’s most scenic sailing waters? Imagine being able to chart your own course and drop anchor anywhere you please in a playground full of tranquil bays and coral islands. Dive from the deck into a myriad of fish and coral or take the dinghy ashore on a deserted beach. As the sun sets over the bow of your boat, be rocked by the sound of lapping water as you settle down under a canopy of stars.

The Whitsundays offer an ocean of sailing adventures; it’s just a matter of choosing which one suits you. Be spoilt on a luxury yacht, hoist the sails on a tall ship or be part of the action on a crewed charter. Take the helm and skipper your own bareboat yacht or relax on the deck of a mini cruise ship.

Getting there:

Most sailing adventures leave from Airlie Beach, 1115km north of Brisbane.

We did a trip with a bunch of friends in June/July '06, hiring a 40ft Catamaran and jumping on board with enough food and drink to sink a battleship, and fun in our thoughts. Well, fun we had in plenty - from the first couple of days motoring around as there was no wind, then the next few days enjoying the light to medium breezes that would whisk us around the islands with no sound but the splashing of waves against the hull. There's nothing like pulling up to Butterfly Bay, Whitehaven Beach or Hamilton Island in your very own (for the week) sail boat, or relaxing on deck while someone else does the driving and rallying hands to tack or jibe as the wind takes us to the next destination. Pull up anywhere you like and enjoy the view, throw some prawns on the bbq, crack a coldie and relax!! :)

I sailed up from Sydney to the Whitsundays. It was magic. Lots of fond memories.

What a place! What an experience! Rented a yacht for our honeymoon and are going to do it again for our 10th wedding annivesary next year! Beautiful relaxing days - swimming, adventures and scenic views 360 degrees!

It would be a fabulous way to see the islands of the coast and have a really relaxing way of life for a short time.

You have to go to the Whitsundays. Crystal clear blue water, gorgeous islands, fabulous clear skies. Ahhh to be there now!

Many, many moons ago I was at the Airlie Beach toad races. My rented toad, whom I named Aphrodite, came in third and I won a six-pack. The person whose toad had won commented he'd much rather have won my prize than the day sailing around the Whitsundays on a trimaran which he had won. I suggested a swap as I don't drink and so we both went away happy. I had a fabulous day's sailing, a wonderful and unexpected highlight to the holiday!

Sailing the calm waters of the Whitsunday islands is my idea of a really relaxing holiday.
