John Flynn Place Museum - Home of the Royal Flying Doctor

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

It was in the historical town of Cloncurry that a gentle and quiet man, Mr John Flynn, forged forward in his efforts to make a "Mantle of Safety" over the inland. His resolve and belief that "if you start an idea, nothing can stop it" resulted in the creation of one of the miracles of the outback – the Flying Doctor Service.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service first commenced operations in 1928 and the John Flynn Place Museum is a wonderful tribute to a man who remained determined in his efforts amid much scepticism to bring wings to his doctors. At the time, his visions were considered wild and revolutionary but he succeeded in combining aircraft, radios and medicine to give safety to the outback.

Spend time looking through the extensive displays in the Fred McKay Art Gallery and RFDS Museum, cultural centre, outdoor theatre and gardens. The museum also has its very own "Victory", a model of the first RFDS aircraft.

I have an ever increasing interest in small aircraft, one of my friends, the first woman pilot in New Zealand, has encouraged this, and I can't wait to go here.

This centre is a credit to those who organised it and who keep it running, as well as a wonderful tribute to John Flynn and all who have made the flying doctor possible. So informative and inspirational... and I loved the carpet map! Thanks Cloncurry.

If you're driving between Townsville & Mt Isa it is great to get out of the car along the way & learn about our nations history. It makes the journey more meaningful.

An icon of Australia and certainly the vital lifeline to our remote regions. Cloncurry is the birthplace of this incredible service, and is a 'Must See' attraction for domestic and international travellers!
