Who needs to go to Borneo when you can spot turtles on our own continent!

On a lonely beach on the Western Cape, you can make a difference to the life of a tiny turtle hatchling or save an adult turtle from a slow and painful death.
The community of Mapoon, located 80km north of Weipa, has established a beachside base camp for managing turtle conservation at the mouth of Janie Creek. Here at Camp Chivaree tourists are invited to join with rangers from the local indigenous community, clearing beaches of ghost nets and protecting freshly laid eggs from feral pigs.
Operating during the dry season from July to October, you will work alongside the Mapoon Aboriginal owners and researchers as they collect data and measure and tag nesting Flat Back and Olive Ridley turtles.
This visit is sure to make your heart swell. You will enter one of Australia’s most remote regions, work with the indigenous people who call it home and have a huge impact on saving the turtle, an animal that has survived for 120million years but currently under serious threat.
Getting there:
Weipa is 2490km north of Brisbane on Western Cape York. Access by road or air. You will be driven to Camp Chivaree, an hours beach and 4WD track, south of Mapoon.
By train:
Unfortunately this experience is not accessible by rail. To learn more about other great rail adventures visit the Traveltrain website. To book your rail adventure call Traveltrain Holidays on 1800 627 655.

This would be good for the soul and something everyone should try to do.
#3
sometimes its not what you have done, but what you want to do with passion that I'm voting, so that I can go up to rescue the Turtles and make a difference in many ways at Camp Chivaree for the sake of our Turtles
#4
we should do everything we can to help these creatures
#5
this looks like it would be an awesome experience for all ages.
#6
this should be advertised more. I had no idea you could do this in Australia let alone Qld. I've love to do this.
#7
This is an exceptional tourist destination with an abundance of beauty and happiness to experience and remember forever.
#8
I've done a little of this in a variety of beaches throughout Qld and it is a very rewarding job. Try it!

If you have never visited Cape York then this is the trip to do - from first landing in Weipa then the drive up to Camp Chivaree - the great hospitality and knowledge of our wonderful turtles. Very exciting trip and you learn so much ALL THE WAY.

Turtle Camp is truly a magical place, surrounded by an ageless environment of saltwater, sand, magnificent wetlands, breattaking flora and fauna and Aboriginal mystique. It may take time and effort to reach this place, but aren't life's magic experiences worth leaving the beaten track for?
