Pumicestone Passage, Bribie Island

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

It’s a crystal clear day out on the water. The fresh sea breeze is caressing your face and you kick back on deck in the sunshine, admiring the scenic coastline. But you remain alert. Any telltale breaks on the surface of the water can signal a dolphin, dugong, turtle or fish. The Pumicestone Passage is seething with wildlife both above and below the sparkling blue expanse before you.

Formed by a 35km channel, which runs between Bribie Island and the Caboolture coastline, Pumicestone Passage is a protected marine park and safe haven for wildlife.

It also boasts more bird species than Kakadu so birdwatchers will revel in a day out on the water.

The Bribie Island Ferryman offers excellent tours of the Pumicestone Passage with fascinating commentary along the way. You can also hire small boats from Bribie Island to explore this beautiful area at your own pace.

Getting there:

Bribie Island is located approximately 45mins drive north of Brisbane along the Bruce Highway.

We hired a BBQ barge and had a lovely day fishing and cruising the passage. Dolphins even came right up to check us out.

This experience is always enjoyable and often involves contact with a dolphin close up!!! Many times we have driven up from Brisbane and had either a picnic or bbq with family and friends. Also you spend the day glancing at the Glass House Mountains across the passage!!!

Bribie Island is a fantastic place to visit and so easy to get to from Brisbane! I remember spending lots of holidays here as a kid.
