Portside, Maryborough

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Imagine over 22,000 free settlers taking their first steps ashore after months at sea and the hustle and bustle that would have amassed on the shores of the Mary River.

Maryborough, one of Queensland's oldest towns was settled in 1847 with the opening of a port to transport wool. It soon became a bustling centre holding all the glitz and glamour of a colonial meeting place.

Elegant and stately buildings were erected up and down Wharf Street and although the port closed in 1974, its history and beautifully preserved buildings remain for us to recreate the scenes of bygone years.

Marybourough's Portside district runs from the Brolga Theatre along the Mary River to the Marina and extends out to parts of Kent, Bazaar and March Streets in the CBD. Around 13 heritage-listed buildings are open to the public and on the third Saturday of every month you can join local residents in historic colonial dress on an extensive five hour "Ship to Shore" tour. Combine a sunset cruise on the Mary River, a horse and wagon ride, historic buildings, cheese tasting and an elegant three course dinner at the Port Residence and historic Post Office Hotel.

Queensland’s Heritage City can also be enjoyed on a free guided walking tour, bus tour or river tour where you will discover over 100 lovingly restored historical buildings, homes, and historical sites.

A step back in time. A place where the past catches up with the present. A quiet place to reflect and enjoy what this charming town has to offer.

Maryborough, a city that has cared enough to maintain it's heritage and recognises it's national achievers, city sons and daughters who are commemorated by plaques set in the pavement of the Portside precinct.

Great place for a picnic lunch and a lovely stroll along the path beside the river. Always a delight.
