Mini Moke around Magnetic Island

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

From Townsville, whisk across the 8km of brilliant blue sea to Magnetic Island where it is traditional to explore this natural paradise by mini moke.

With the wind on your face and the salt sea air in your hair, take to the scenic winding roads that hug precariously close to the coastline to discover more than 20 bays and beaches, towering hoop pines, huge granite boulders and a friendly laid-back community.

Park up your moke and take to the walking tracks where you can spot koalas in the wild and wander through the ruins of the Forts complex operated during World War II.

Out on the secluded bays, charter boats skim over the glassy sea and divers and snorkellers enjoy fringing coral reefs and shipwrecks. Of an evening "Maggie" as it is affectionately known, comes alive with everything from jazz parties to cane toad races.

Getting there:

Townsville is located 1356km north of Brisbane and accessible by road, rail and air. Sunferries offer a high-speed passenger service from Townsville to Magnetic Island taking only 20minutes.

Last time I went to Magnetic Island I could not touch the pedals on the moke. That was 19 years ago when I was one. Now that I have got my licence I should be able to touch the pedals.
