Holiday at Moreton Island

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Beautiful beaches, clear blue water and deserts of sand will greet you on arrival, although the star attractions don’t show up until dusk. Each evening at Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort, Moreton Island, a pod of bottlenose dolphins cruise into the shallows for a free feed by guests and dolphin care staff. It is a close encounter of the wild kind.

But Moreton Island can be as wild or as laid back as you want it to be. Tangalooma boasts over 75 different tours and activities to suit all ages. If you are adventurous, scream down a huge sand dune on a flying sand toboggan or quad bike, jet ski, snorkel and scuba dive on the Tangalooma Wrecks.

For a quieter life, Moreton Island is both a recreation area and national park so you can choose to seek out crystal clear creeks, lagoons and coastal heath in the privacy of your own four-wheel-drive. The sheltered bays are home to many marine animals - dugong feed on seagrass, migratory shorebirds roost on the island’s beaches and humpback whales can be seen from June to November.

Getting there:

Access to the island is by barge or launch. The barge trip from Whyte Island near Lytton takes two hours. Tangalooma Resort operates a passenger launch from Holt Street Wharf, Pinkenba (one kilometre downstream from the Gateway Bridge on the Brisbane River). Transfer time 75minutes. You can also catch a vehicle and passenger catamaran, the MiCat, from the Port of Brisbane. The island is also accessed by private boat.

Further information:

If not staying at the resort a four-wheel-drive is necessary to get around the island.

Some friends and I went camping on Moreton once when I was single. When my boy is old enough I'll take him for a weekend and we'll do some bonding, there's no better place to do it I think.

Walking along the great beaches at watching the sunset over the mainland is very relaxing. The best part of the visit is being able to feed the dolphins - a magical experience - why would anyone travel all the way to Monkey Mia when we have a much better opportunity right here a short boat trip from Brisbane

Fantastic place to camp and fish. The most beautiful blue water on the western side of the island you will ever see and you can swim in it.

Have been there many times now over the past 12 years - and loved it **every time**. That such a fantastic snorkelling location (at the wrecks) is so close to Brisbane - is amazing! Kids love feeding the dolphins.

What is amazing about this Island is that it is not over crowded yet it is at Brisbane's doorstep. Great fishing, camping and 4WD adventures await you! Swim in the fresh water lakes or roll down the giant sand dunes! Got To Love It!

Moreton Island is truly the jewel in the crown of South East Queensland and one of the most beautiful places I know. I make several pilgrimages to Moreton each year and just feel alive the moment your feet touch that lush sand. Such stunning scenery, amazing birdlife and reliably good fun fishing for everyone and right on the doorstep of one of the geat cities of the world.
