Who needs a history book when you can experience it yourself. The architecture in this town is simply marvelous. You must see the gold mining town of Ravenswood nearby as well.

If you like your history just a little bit spooky, Charters Towers is said to have a closet full of golden ghosts.
On a dark and stormy night back in 1871, gold was discovered here when Hugh Mosman and his stockman, Jupiter, were out searching for their horses that had bolted during a thunderous storm. It sparked one of the largest gold rushes in Queensland’s history and a flurry of grand and majestic buildings were erected, flaunting the town’s wealth.
Follow the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail from the visitor centre in Mosman Street, which includes One Square Mile (the heart of town), the old stock exchange, Towers Hill gold site and the Venus Battery historic milling site.
Listen as many of the town’s restless spirits recreate the greed and the glory from those heady goldmining days.
You’ll look pale and white as you walk from the old World Theatre where all those years ago an ugly murder took place. Have you just seen a ghost? No-one doubts you. The "Phantom of the Theatre" often appears to people here.
Getting there:
Charters Towers is 1300km north of Brisbane and 136km southwest of Townsville and easily accessed by road and rail.

You might be young, you might be old, but there's plenty to discover in this town full of gold. The Venus Gold Battery is this huge, rusty and very old corrugated iron building but once you're inside the ghosts come out to play. A night tour would be awesome.

Definitely worth a visit - so much history all around to be viewed and enjoyed. Ghosts of Gold is one of the best things in the area to enjoy. Charters Towers has a very historical feel and provides a valuable insight into what life was like on the goldfields in years long ago. The cemetery's are full of interesting stories of those who came to Charters Towers to try their luck and worth a wander through for sure.

Loved Charters Towers, particularly the mountain near town,,sat and meditated and just enjoyed the vast horizon. The sense of past wealth, grandeur and a faded sense of importance in the scheme of things left me intigued and a little perplexed until I researched the town a little ,definitely a magical place to visit I will be returning
