Explore the untouched Gulf country by train onboard Gulflander

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

They say the Gulflander takes its passengers on a voyage “from nowhere to nowhere”. With the Gulflander making its half day journey through some of the most remote and inaccessible countryside on the Queensland map it’s easy to see why!

This award winning service makes its way 152 kilometres inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria as it travels between Normanton and Croydon. Voyage into the real gulf country – see the wetlands, the grasslands and the arid savannah country. A trip on board the Gulflander is undoubtedly more of an adventure than a rail journey.

Enjoy a friendly, casual atmosphere on board and expert commentary on the journey which will unlock the secrets of this unique landscape. The territory that the Gulflander ventures through has a history that is just as fascinating as the incredible terrain itself.

Passengers on board the Gulflander can choose to spend the night in Croydon and experience its many historical sights before returning to Normanton the following day. Alternatively you can make the return journey the same day.

The Gulflander began operating in 1891 as a service to join Normanton to the teeming Croydon goldfields. Amazingly this line has never been linked to the main Queensland rail network.

Fondly referred to as the “old tin hare” the Gulflander is one of just two trains in Australia to be heritage listed.

Loved it! This was a fantastic experience! The people who keep this train running are to be heartily congratulated. We were lucky enough, in late July, to be in town when the organisers put on a series of short round-trips because so many people were around and interested. Everyone was very friendly and we enjoyed the ride out of town and back very much.

This is a must do to catch a glimpse of the countryside in Gulf Country and how funny it will be to travel in the 'tin hare'!

Unfortunately our limited time in Normanton didn't coincide with the running of the gulflander - we will be back to do it.

The Gulflander is a fantastic way to take in the sights of the Gulf Country as you travel from Normanton to Croydon. I have done a number of trips on the Gulflander. Do it! there is a real romance of the old train days, step back in time at Croydon a very special place where history can come alive if you spent the time see the old buildings and the displays inside them. Locals will have plenty of stories of the early days and ghosts.
