SPIRIT OF THE OUTBACK

Spirit of the Outback offers an up-front view of Queensland’s captivating outback, from the air conditioned comfort of your seat. This award winning 24 hour journey spans 1,325 kilometres from Brisbane, to Longreach in outback Queensland. Witness Queensland’s ever changing landscape – from the rugged mountains to the wide open plains – and uncover the unique characters of the outback.

On its way out west the Spirit of the Outback ventures through the heritage towns of Blackwater, Emerald and Barcaldine before arriving at Longreach, home of the famous Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. The Spirit of the Outback offers a unique insight into the history and culture of early Australia, combining expert commentary with a friendly social atmosphere.

On your journey to Longreach you will meander your way past extinct volcanoes, large cattle stations and kilometres of sugar cane plantations. Each window on board the Spirit of the Outback is an ever changing portrait of Queensland.

Dining on board the Spirit of the Outback is an experience in itself. Enjoy hearty Aussie meals in the dining car, unwind by sharing a drink with your fellow passengers in the lounge car or relax with a movie in the club car.

Passengers on board the Spirit of the Outback can choose from economical economy class seating or the added comfort of a sleeping berth.

Services depart Brisbane and Longreach twice a week. Spirit of the Outback is the perfect choice for an authentic Australian experience, having recently been awarded Major Tourist Attraction of the year at the 2008 Outback Tourism Awards.

It would be hard to leave the new forester at home but I do like train trips.

I love train travel and have always found the QR staff pleasant and helpful. It's a long time since I did the Longreach train trip so I will put that one on my to do list. My eyes will be glued to the windows watching Queensland...I don't want to miss any of it.

My vote was only 5 for the following reason...Although a Life Member of the HOF since the 1980's I've never been there. I receive the HOF magazine and enjoy reading about the history, etc. One of these days I'll get there, but as I approach my 71st birthday I'd better get a wriggle on.

Brings back childhood memories of travelling by train. A perfect way to take a holiday, and see QLD in comfort and style.
