Explore Girraween National Park

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Situated at the northern end of the New England Tableland, fertile farming and grazing lands give way to the rugged Girraween National Park, an area of massive granite outcrops, boulders and precariously balanced rocks.

During the spring, walls of flowers climb over trees and paths, lighting up the area in shades of pink, purple, yellow, white and red. The normal grey granite base is awash with colour and the overabundance of flowering shrubs and fresh water attracts prolific birdlife along the creek banks.

This park is a paradise for walkers. There are 17km of walking tracks ranging from a 1.4km return walk to Granite Arch, to a 10.4km return walk to Mount Norman. For the more adventurous, you can’t leave without doing The Pyramid. This vertical trek up a monstrous granite dome offers magnificent sweeping views over Girraween National Park, wondrous balancing boulders, colourful skinks and an adventure neither the children nor you will ever forget.

Getting there:

Girraween National Park is approximately 260km southwest of Brisbane.

Most walks start near the visitor information centre and picnic area.

By train:

Catch The Westlander to Toowoomba. Girraween National Park is located approximtately 2.5 hours drive from Toowoomba. To book your rail adventure call Traveltrain Holidays on 1800 627 655.

A special spot to get away from the crowds wandering through the granite landscape.

Giraween provides an amazing landscape - the wildflowers are beautiful, the walks provide unique views and experiences, and hours can be spent by the creek exploring and enjoying the pools fast flowing water.

Girraween National Park is a place I have always loved scince I first went there as a young 8 year old. The massive boulders, Granite ridges and the cool refreshing waters of the meandering creeks and pools is simply the best relaxing getting back to nature feeling I know.

Girraween is a pleasure to visit in summer and winter. The peaceful camping facilities are visited by kangaroos, the walking tracks are an experience and climbing up the Pyramids... exciting, no matter how many times you climb up to the summit.

We have family and friend that have visited Girraween and rave about it so it's definitely on our list of 'must do's' for 2009.

This is the closest "alien planet" experience to Brisbane, so all those in and visiting the Great SE should make the trip. A worthwhile experience no matter how many times you go.
