Ekka - where the city meets the country

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

It’s Queensland’s biggest and best-loved annual family event – the Brisbane exhibition or the Brisbane "Ekka" as it is affectionately known, showering Brisbane in carnival atmosphere for 10 days straight in August.

Amid the thrills and spills of dizzying rides and the dazzling lights of Sideshow Alley, try to encourage the family past the show bags and into some of the excellent exhibits and pavilions.

Everything country is here for the city folk - loads of cows, bulls, horses and chooks. Animal Boulevard is a super-sized animal display where an animal nursery and milking barn get visitors up close to some of nature’s cutest creatures. Try some cooking demonstrations and sampling opportunities in the Fresh Food Pavilion or be tempted by local wines. You can even go shopping at the John Reid Wool Pavilion. Seats are hard to find in the Dog Pavilion during Best in Show and the list just keeps getting longer. Flower and garden, lifestyle and leisure, it’s all paraded here amid the fanfare of fireworks, fashion parades and live music.

The Brisbane Exhibition knows how to generate some seriously intense fun. They’ve been doing it for over 130 years.

You can't miss this annual event. Have to visit each year for a greasy dagwood dog followed by a strawberry cone. Although I do think admission should be less expensive (even free)....

The Ekka will be here again in August 09 The Westerlies’ll come and the sun will shine. We’ll visit the piggies, the goats and their kids and to all the pavilions if our legs will forgive. We’ll watch horses and cattle, the woodchop and sheepdogs. We’ll have juices and milkshakes, eat fairyfloss and icecream, Maybe pies and ketchup, or two saucey Dag’ dogs, The rides could be perilous, get ready to scream! There’ll be lots of sample bags of all different kinds, Full of licorice and chocolate - it’ll make your heart dizzy. Thankfully there are ten days for us to be busy, Because one isn’t enough to enjoy all of these finds.

I love the Ekka!! The fruit pavillion, seeing the dogs, showbags, free test tates and of course the rides. I go every year and it's always great!
