Cobb & Co Changing Station, Surat

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

For 40 years Cobb & Co coaches ruled the roads and were Surat’s lifeline delivering goods, transporting passengers, linking towns and bringing mail. Holding an important place in history, the very last scheduled Cobb & Co coach travelled from Surat to Yuleba in 1924.

Within the building that once served as a changeover station for travellers and horses alike, the Cobb & Co Changing Station complex now displays varying exhibitions depicting the lifestyles of yesteryear and the importance of Cobb & Co to Surat. The Cobb & Co Store Museum, the Balonne River Gallery, a fresh water aquarium, library and Surat visitor information centre are all together here in one complex.

Come face-to-face with a Murray Cod and Yellowbelly as you are met by a magnificent floor-to-ceiling mural depicting the Balonne River bank. Wander through the old Cobb & Co store and admire travelling exhibitions and work from local and regional artists. Enjoy exhibitions of the town’s wool industry history, old Cobb’s Store and some quirky tales, pranks and unusual happenings.

You can all but hear the clip clop of the horses as you view the replica 14-seater Cobb & Co coach.

The stories from the Cobb and Co era are captivating and the technology was the best in its day and is still being used today. An Icon that deserves more acknowledgement, especially between the States.
