Brisbane River Adventures

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

If you think Brisbane is just another city overflowing with excellent shopping, superb restaurants and fabulous cultural experiences, think again - get down to the river and experience Brisbane from a different angle. At Riverlife Adventure Centre you can see the city from the rocks, from the water, or on wheels.

Face your fears abseiling down Kangaroo Point’s weathered walls or crawling up them, rock by rock. From a dangling position you will see the city from a new perspective.

Imagine cutting through the darkness on your kayak and gliding silently under the Story Bridge. Whether you are an experienced paddler or it’s your first time on the water, you will be captivated by the city’s charm as the high rise reflections dance playfully in your wake.

So you’re not a cliff-hanger and would prefer to keep your feet firmly on the shore? Start at the beautiful City Botanic Gardens and follow the river north to connect to the floating RiverWalk, over 20km of walking paths along the beautiful Brisbane River. To increase the pace, break out your wheels or hire them (bicycles, rollerblades and kick bikes) from Riverlife Adventure Centre.

Wining and dining on the water is also popular with cruises such as the Kookaburra River Queen offering buffet lunch and dinner cruises, live entertainment, and everchanging views.

Riverlife Adventure Centre: access via the Kangaroo Point steps (off River Terrace) or catch CityCat to the Thornton St Ferry Terminal then follow the signs.

These guys run an amazing show, not only were they at Morton Island, but they are also in the River! The shop is neat, the gears are good, the staff friendly and the package is great!

Kayaking along the Brisbane River was excellent fun - a great way to see the city and keep fit at the same time. You can't beat being on the water so close to the river when the sun is shining. Riverlife were great.

I live and work in Australia's desert - based in Alice Springs. I love the desert - desert and semi arid regions account for over 70% of the country and is incredibly diverse. Although there are rivers and waterways that run through the desert, there is little opportunity to go kayaking around Alice Springs. So, when I get the opportunity to go to Brisbane I go to Riverlife and jump in a kayak. It is great to get on the water and also to experience the city from this perspective. Its great for the spirit!

The Brisbane River is the windiest river on the east coast of a Australia (it means it's the bendiest....) and has so much to offer on and off the water - the Kookaburra Queen, Ferry Cats, bike paths, city lights, Kangaroo Point, South Bank, the Story Bridge, rowing, boating. Relaxing and spending time with family and friends is perfect with any and all of these settings, why would you go anywhere else??

Riverlife offered our group of young people a fantastic session of kayaking down the Brisbane River. Every member of our group enjoyed their afternoon immensely and gave them an opportunity to experience Brisbane from a different perspective. The group members kept asking when the next session would be!!

I spent my 40th Birthday on the Kookaburra Queen which was a most enjoyable night. We partied on board whilst taking in the city lights of Brisbane as our cruise took us up and down the Brisbane River. What better way is there to enjoy your birthday with friends and family than on a cruise.

I have experienced the thrill of ferry transport many times on Sydney harbour particularly as a youth when I lived and worked in Sydney. My daily routine for work was donning my coat and tie in winter and imagining myself as the captain of a sailing boat traversing the harbour as I travelled across to Circular Quay. One day I hope to do a more leisurely trip along the Brisbane river front and maybe imagine myself as a well to do tourist exploring the beautiful city of Brisbane. I lived there for many years in the middle part of my life.
