Bowen Murals

The town of Bowen, in the northern region of the Whitsundays, 40 minute's drive from Airlie Beach, has become known and loved for many things – award-winning palm-fringed beaches, nearby colourful reef and great estuary fishing. But it’s Bowen’s history that has a lot of people talking.

Proudly displayed throughout Bowen’s streets, 24 bright and colourful murals depict the rich and historical past of the town’s early settlement history, through to present day. Illustrating the history of The Newspaper, Pioneer Women, Early Farming Days, the Federation of Port and much more, the murals have been painted by well known Queensland artists, one by the art students of Bowen High School and one also by famed artist Ken Done.

For a guided walking tour of the murals, join a one-and-a-half hour tour that leaves every Wednesday morning from the Municipal Library, location of the first mural. Tours run from April to December.

Getting there:

Starting point for the mural tours is the Municipal Library, Cnr Herbert and Powell Streets. Bowen is located 1157km north of Brisbane and easily accessed by road and rail.

the murals are so detailed... it'd be great to know a little of the history behind them, too

As a descendant of one of the first families of Bowen I am possibly biased but.. just come into Bowen and you'll by amazed!!! It IS the most beautiful little town in Qld. The friendly locals will happily tell you all the places to go for a look and the MUSEUM and Historical Society members who staff it, are a font of knowledge about early QLD pioneering history that Bowen is of course part of.

We spent many school holidays in Bowen. It is a great place for a quiet getaway with many options and links to the surrounding countryside, water exploits and remembering the past as you can with the murals. Bowen is a great place to visit and explore.

Bowen, with its many murals, is similar in that respect to Sheffield in Tasmania. You may not travel to Bowen for the murals, but once there they are certainly hard to miss. If you are a lover of art or history, then the tour is well worth taking as it dovetails the art and history beautifully. If you just drive through the town you'll miss out on the interesting stories behind each mural.
