Getting to one of Queensland’s most remote, but charming and picturesque, National Parks is half the fun when you trek to Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park in the state’s far north-west. But stand high on smouldering red cliffs overlooking the emerald-green Lawn Hill gorge and you will agree, it’s well worth the drive.
There are many walks to do within the park and you can hire a canoe to venture into the heart of this ancient landscape, enjoying the lush plant life, elusive freshwater crocodiles and glowing reflections along the way.
This spectacular gorge country holds the secrets to one of the richest and most superbly preserved fossil deposits in the world. Even David Attenborough declared this area, the Riversleigh Fossil Fields, to be one of the four most important fossil deposits on Earth.
Out here there are just two seasons - wet and dry. The best time to visit is the dry season from May to October. The wet brings heat and heavy rains, sometimes making roads impassable for long periods of time.
Getting there:
The park is 340 kilometres north-west of Mount Isa, allow four to five hours drive. Many road sections are rough and unsealed and a four-wheel-drive is recommended.
By train:
Catch The Inlander from Townsville to Mount Isa. Boodjamulla National Park at Lawn Hill is located 5 hours drive from Mount Isa. To book your rail adventure call Traveltrain Holidays on 1800 627 655.

Boodjamulla is an oasis in a stark country. Every which way you look it is enthrallingly beautiful. The canoe ride was awesome. FANTASTIC!!

More awareness is needed for Australians to visit this unique ancient wilderness, rather than focusing on overseas. Once in a lifetime experience, and so close to home.

I never thought I would be lucky enough to experience this pristine gorge. The canoe paddle was a highlight and not to be missed

Getting to Lawn Hill/Boodjamulla is well worth the hassle and the many bumps along the track. And even getting to the park opens you to incredible scenery. But once in there be prepared to be AMAZED! Walking the track along the side of waters is "something else" , but actually paddling along, you are transported back in time as you see paintings high up on the cliff face, and journey around corners which open up whole new vistas of amazement and experience - even different 'levels' of experience, if you get out of your canoe and go up the small waterfall that separates the two levels of the gorge. You will never forget it or the experience.
