Big Rig, Roma

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Over one hundred years ago, Australia’s gas and oil industry was born in Roma, quite by accident. A drilling crew boring for water came upon the unexpected as gas, mud and water gushed out of their well. And as they say - the rest is history.

History that is brought to life at the “Big Rig”, the town’s major tourist attraction, paying tribute to Roma’s oil and gas industry that began back in 1900. Through intriguing collections of stories, photos, facts and presentations, The Big Rig caters to all ages as it journeys you through the discovery of petroleum and onto the multi-billion dollar industry it is today.

Located on an old oil derrick on the outskirts of town, discover the rigs, machinery and pioneers that shaped this era but be sure to come back at night. Through a theatrical presentation with pyrotechnics, computer lighting and a digitally mastered soundtrack, a night show dramatically recreates this remarkable story of Australia’s oil and gas.

This is a great insight into an industry that isn't well known. I found it to be a display that is interesting. I loved the stories of the pioneers.

Working in the industry this provided a unique perspective on where we'd come from. Thoroughly enjoyable for all those who thrive on the history of our proud land.

Excellent display and record of the oil industry in this area. Loved the night show - excellent commentary and very enjoyable. Roma is the showcase town of the west.
