Australian Camp Oven Festival

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

It’s not just the authentic camp oven food that draws such a crowd to Millmerran for the bi-annual Australian Camp Oven Festival; it’s the entire weekend packed with activities for the whole family to enjoy. And what family doesn’t want to bring a little Australian Heritage to their children in a fun and active way?

The scene is set with lots of hay bales, saddles, cartwheels and camp ovens when the kids are called to join in a damper throwing and billy boiling competition. The Mailbox Muster brings the craziest and most talented creations of mailboxes that you are ever likely to see, but it’s the cooking competition that sets off the most steam.

Enter as an individual or part of a team and whip up some great tucker in sections such as Traditional Bush Smoko, Pudding Baked Mud Lizard or Bush Dinner (roast leg of lamb with vegetables and spotted dog custard).

While the pots are simmering, there’s entertainment such as the horse whisperer, sheep shearing competitions and live country music.

It’s the perfect way to celebrate your bush heritage.

Getting there:

Millmerran Showgrounds, Cecil Plains Road. Millmerran is located 200km west of Brisbane.

Great Grub always comes out the campfire oven, and it gets pretty competitive which is good for us taste testers.

We would like to see it kept typically Australian and not get commercialised. The time we had was a wonderful experience with our family. The people were friendly and the food and Camp Oven Cooking was magical.
