Agnes Water and the Town of 1770

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Visitors come to the Discovery Coast for golden beaches, rugged headlands, national parks and the offshore Great Barrier Reef but then again, you may just seek the charm of a quiet coastal town and somewhere to dip your fishing rod.

Captain Cook chose this point to come ashore on his first Queensland landing back in May 1770 and each year Agnes Water and the Town of 1770 still celebrate their good fortune with a colourful festival overlooking the stunning beauty of Bustard Bay.

If you ever tire of the dreamy view, get adventurous and jump on a Scooter-Roo tour. Twist the throttle of your cool-looking "chopper" and see the sights in an off-beat manner, spotting kangaroos and wallabies along the way.

Learn to surf on Agnes Water beach, hire a kayak, swim, fish and dive. Join a tour on the bright pink amphibious LARC that switches from 4WD to boat, quicker than you can shake out your beach towel, or take a daytrip to Lady Musgrave Island and Fitzroy Reef.

Captain Cook must be very proud. His landing point still remains one of the most beautiful places in Queensland.

Getting there:

Agnes Water and the Town of 1770 are approximately 480km north of Brisbane and accessed by car or Greyhound/McCafferty’s bus (turn left off the Bruce Highway at Miriam Vale or travel via Bundaberg).

By train:

Catch The Sunlander, Tilt Train or Spirit of the Outback to Miriam Vale. Agnes Water and the Town of 1770 are located approximately 50 minutes from Miriam Vale. To book your rail adventure call Traveltrain Holidays on 1800 627 655.

Fantastic place and not overcrowded even at easter time when we were there. We hired a tinnie at 1770 marina and went fishing for the day it was great and we caught some fish.Highly recommended.

A beautiful out of the way place to visit. So relaxing but don't forget to take a ride in the Larc.

Hidden gem - beautiful, serene, relaxing but also lots to do if you want to keep active. Stopped in here briefly but definitely on my must-do list to visit for a longer stay.

Beautiful area. I sailed the Young Endeavour into here back in 2002. The people are great, the place is beautiful and a great area to explore and/or relax.

We have been to 1770 and Agnes Waters 4 times in the past 20 years and they are the most beautifil and relaxing places around. I was only there at Christmas time and the water was great. Sat and swam at Agnes Waters. It is great to fish at 1770, have a drink and watch the Lark and also watch the cat come and go to Lady Musgrave Island. Super Place. The beach at Captain Cook Caravan park is also a great place to swim and not too many people on the beach ( none infact) same with the National Park. Gets my vote anyday.
