Holiday at Stradbroke Island

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

Can you handle front row seats overlooking the Coral Sea with spectacular views, perfect beaches and rolling surf all around you? There will also be room for a huge seafood platter as you sip cool cocktails watching dolphins, turtles and manta-rays play in the ocean before you. If it’s during winter or spring, the humpback whales may even join in.

This is daily life at the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel, better known as the Straddie Pub, perched high on a natural bush headland at Point Lookout, overlooking the sea.

North Stradbroke Island is one of Australia’s great sand islands where life revolves around long stretches of beach, surfing, fishing and swimming. The island’s natural freshwater lakes provide a quiet alternative to the ocean and for history buffs Dunwich and Amity Point have some early stories to tell.

Take to the dunes for a spot of sandboarding on one of Australia’s rare sand islands, South Stradbroke Island. There are 22km of open beach to enjoy with surf breaks on the eastern side or a quiet water option on the west. Pitch a tent or stay at one of two resorts on the island offering peaceful seclusion just 40 minutes ferry ride away from the glittering Gold Coast.

Getting there:

From Brisbane city stations Central or Roma Street, take the CityTrain Cleveland line to Cleveland. Trains run regularly (approximately every half hour). A shuttle bus is available between Cleveland train station and the two water taxi terminals.

Regular water taxi and vehicular barges run between Cleveland (35km from Brisbane CBD) and the island community of Dunwich.

This would have to be one of Brisbane's best kept secrets - even though the secret has been leaking out since my first visit in 1983! Straddie is so close to Brisbane, yet it is so far ..... in that if you are going for a holiday and taking the car packed with gear, it costs to return by ferry, hence you have an excuse to stay on the island, rather than running backwards and forwards to Brisbane on whim or on request. Straddie's is significant in many ways, from being the home of the Quandamooka tribe, to blue lake which was significant to the men of the tribe, and brown lake - the women's lake. Straddie is a sand island, so be sure to take care of it and its pristine water both on and around it. You'll just love its magic and ability to really let you relax.

The renovated pub is great and fantastic views from the beer garden. we saw heaps of whales from our balcony and we have done the gorge walk many times but still marvel at its beauty each time, a photographers dream. a must do.

I lived on Stradbroke for two years and enjoyed every single day. There is so much variety from the lakes to the beaches and headlands with the gorges. The fishing is great, the surfing is great the bushwalking offers such marvellous scenes and views. A very special place.

I love it that this beautiful island is just at my doorstep. Lakes, sandy beaches, wild surf to calm waters, fishing, dolphins, whales, offroad access, great range of pubs and cafes to visit or simply relax at the campsite watching the sun set.
