Barramundi Fishing, Atherton Tablelands

Get there by train Get there by road Accommodation

You have hooked a monster and you’ve fought him all the way. You can see him now alongside your boat, beautiful big scales glowing in the soft afternoon light. He’s huge, more than 20kg but then Lake Tinaroo does have a reputation for having some of the biggest barramundi in the world.

Situated on the Tropical Cairns Highlands, Lake Tinaroo covers 14,000 hectares with 209km of shoreline. Stocked each year with fresh baby barra, this is home to record sized barramundi, where there are no fishing closures all year round and no maximum size limits in place.

Fishing trips with an experienced guide are a great way to get the best out of your days fishing. It’s a large lake and your guide will have intimate knowledge of the fish habitat. If you’re lucky, he might even share some of his secret spots with you.

Getting there:

Lake Tinaroo is situated near Atherton, 80km from Cairns.

By train:

Catch The Sunlander or Tilt Train to Cairns. The Atherton Tablelands are located 1-2 hours drive from Cairns. Take your car on holiday with you when travelling onboard The Sunlander using Mototrail. To book your rail adventure call Traveltrain Holidays on 1800 627 655.

I could not believe the stories of these great Barramundis until I actually saw them there. Unfortuneately I didn`t catch 1 so I have to go back. A must do this year.

Even though we didn't go fishing, it is well worth the drive to Lake Tinaroo- there's great walking tracks and magestic gums to see.

The hidden Cassowaries of Lake Tinaroo: Old timers spoke of 'Cassowary Straight' a section of gravel road behind the lake where these beautiful flightless birds were frequently sighted. They roamed this stretch of habitat freely till human activity and dogs drove them away. However, do not despair, for they remain safe hidden in the jungle clad mountains close by. And their location remains safe for there are only a few of us left who know of their hideaway.

The ease of catching made this very enjoyable.
